Prodigy Game (SMARTeacher Inc) was developed as a 4th-year project at University of Waterloo by their 2 Co-founders Rohan Mahimker and Alex Peters. You may even have seen the company pitch on CBC’s Dragon’s Den in 2012; 4 of the Dragons made an offer which Alex and Rohan declined.
From there was the beginning of a successful Canadian start-up. Prodigy Game launched in Ontario in 2013 with 3000 students; mostly based in and around Hamilton and then branched out. Prodigy experienced rapid growth very quickly through Ontario resulting in 80% coverage through grades 1 to 8.
Prodigy has been growing at a tremendous pace doubling their headcount every year! They are over 100 people now. Prodigy Game has won 2 growth award in 2017 (#9 on the Startup 50 list and #2 on the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 list). Even more impressive is the fact that Prodigy is self-funded and governed.
Today, Prodigy is supported by more than 800,000 teachers and 27 million students, the free massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) takes students on a fantasy-inspired journey where success depends on honing curriculum-aligned math skills. As students progress, teachers can customize in-game questions to supplement lessons, prepare for tests and more.
